There are two separate answers here, and most families need the first one. Free or subsidized meals come through Meals on Wheels, Medicaid waivers and some Medicare Advantage plans. Paid prepared-meal services run roughly $8 to $15 a meal. Check the free routes first, because a waiting list is worth joining while you pay for meals.

Work through these before paying. The Administration for Community Living funds senior nutrition programs under the Older Americans Act, and its own page describes home-delivered meals as combining food with regular wellness checks and referral to other services.
One honest caveat sits over all of it. Meals on Wheels America says local providers are seeing higher than usual demand, and that availability and response times vary. It describes waiting lists as a national problem. Apply anyway, then buy meals in the meantime.
Meals on Wheels, through the Older Americans Act
This is the first call for most families. Meals on Wheels America says eligibility usually means adults 60 and over with mobility challenges. Age rules vary by area and provider. On cost it says meals may be free, carry a suggested donation, or run on a sliding scale.
The Eldercare Locator, run by the federal government
The Eldercare Locator connects a ZIP code to the right Area Agency on Aging. It is a public service of the Administration for Community Living. Call 1-800-677-1116 or use eldercare.acl.gov. The agency it points to knows which local nutrition programs are open and what the waiting time looks like.
Medicaid home and community-based services waivers
Many states pay for home-delivered meals through HCBS waivers, the same route that often covers a medical alert device. Eligibility, the benefit name and the approved vendors all vary by state. A state Medicaid office or an Area Agency on Aging can confirm what is available locally.
Some Medicare Advantage plans, usually after a hospital stay
Original Medicare does not pay for meals. Some Medicare Advantage plans add a short home-delivered meal benefit as an extra. Mom's Meals, which contracts with plans, says the benefit often applies on discharge from a hospital or a skilled nursing facility. Check the plan's Evidence of Coverage, then call the number on the member card.
The two phone calls to make first

- The number on the insurance card. Ask whether the plan covers home-delivered meals, and if so for how many days after a hospital stay.
Coverage
Does Medicare Pay for Meal Delivery?
No. Original Medicare does not pay for meals delivered to the home. Medicare.gov sets out what home health care covers, then lists what it does not. Home meal delivery is on the second list:

That settles Parts A and B. Medigap does not change it either, because Medigap only helps with Original Medicare's own cost sharing. It never adds a benefit Original Medicare does not have.
Medicare Advantage is the exception worth chasing. Plans may offer extras that Original Medicare does not cover, and a short course of home-delivered meals is one of them. Mom's Meals, which supplies plans directly, says the benefit is often tied to discharge from a hospital or a skilled nursing facility.
How to check a Medicare Advantage plan
- Open the plan's Evidence of Coverage, mailed each fall and posted on the plan site.
- Search it for “meals” or “nutrition.”
- If nothing turns up, call member services and ask about a post-discharge meal benefit by name.
- Ask how many meals, over how many days, and which supplier the plan uses.

Mom's Meals
Mom's Meals states that its meals are all priced at $9.49 or less, and its how-it-works page lists meals starting at $7.99 each. Recurring orders save 10% with free shipping under Subscribe & Save. Meals arrive refrigerated and the company says they last 14 days.
Delivery frequency follows the order size. Mom's Meals says 1 to 3 meals a week ship monthly, 4 to 7 ship every other week, and 8 or more ship weekly. It also supplies meals as a covered benefit through some Medicaid and Medicare Advantage plans, which is worth asking about before paying out of pocket.

Magic Kitchen says most meals cost about $10 to $15 and that it runs no contracts. Its homepage states a $50 minimum on every order. Standard shipping starts at $22.95, with free shipping on a first order over $100 using its FIRST code and on repeat orders over $125 using its PROGRAM code.
Its complete-meals menu lists the widest set of diets here: portion controlled, diabetic-friendly, dairy free, low sodium, low carbohydrate, low fat, renal diet for CKD stages 3 and 4, dialysis-friendly, gluten-free, vegetarian and pureed. Meals arrive flash frozen.

Silver Cuisine has closed. Its site now redirects to a notice on its parent brand. Pricing below is BistroMD's own. Its Flexible plan lists $149.90 for 10 meals, which is $14.99 each, down to $219.80 for 20 meals, which is $10.99 each. Standard shipping is $19.95.
BistroMD states that AARP members get 50% off and free shipping on a first order, then 10% off all future orders. Delivery is weekly on an auto-delivery subscription, with skip or cancel at any time and 10 to 20 meals per order. Its programs include Heart Healthy, Low Sodium, Diabetic, Gluten Free, Keto Flex, Menopause, Vegan and Signature.

Factor publishes a full price ladder. Six meals a week costs $13.49 per serving, and that falls to $10.99 per serving at 18 meals a week. Shipping is free over $65 and a flat $5.99 below it, which is the lowest shipping cost on this page.

AARP
The One Real Age-Linked Discount
BistroMD is the only service here with a published membership discount. Its AARP page states that members get 50% off and free shipping on a first order, then 10% off all future orders. AARP membership opens at age 50, so this reaches well below the usual senior threshold.
Worth knowing before you count on it: AARP says its member benefits come from third parties rather than from AARP, that providers pay AARP a royalty, and that offers can change. Confirm the current terms with BistroMD at checkout rather than from any article, including this one.
